West Bay Drive - Multimodal Improvements

The improvements under this contract consisted of removal and replacement of existing downtown Largo public-use features and amenities, and over $1-million worth of street lighting and signalization. This was in the City of Largo’s effort to become more pedestrian, bus-rider and bicycle-friendly - or multimodal. Extensive coordination between business owners, David Nelson Construction and City of Largo officials was necessary to facilitate access to the businesses and maintain traffic flow through this major east-west corridor.

The West Bay Drive roadway is a major arterial for the City of Largo that leads to the west coast of Florida and its businesses and beaches. The high usage rates made lane closures necessary to the construction of the concrete public-use areas and roadway-lighting a significantly difficult mobilization of traffic operation.

Additionally, over 21,000 square yards of asphalt milling and paving was completed at night due to these usage rates and over 6,000 square yards of sidewalk replacement. However, throughout the process, and in coordination with the City of Largo, Nelson Construction was successfully able to maintain accessibility to the traveling public.

As part of the City of Largo’s public transportation system improvements to increase ridership and accessibility to Largo citizens, premium bus shelters manufactured by Brasco International were installed under Nelson Construction along the roadway. Many other public-use features were installed as well to make this area a complete downtown, highly traversable by pedestrians. One such feature were the mid-block pedestrian beacons added for crossing the roadway. All these improvements were a part of the City’s push toward a more multimodal community and accessible downtown.
